Matt Arthur

“Matt Arthur’s voice can cut through the energized cacophony of a Saturday night bar-room and the haze of a Sunday morning hangover. His songs bring understanding and mercy — whether or not you’re inspired to get up, wash your face, and put on your cleanest dirty shirt; fall back into bed; or head back to the bar, this is the right music for the occasion.” — Reverend Russell Rathbun

Matt kicks things off for the Urban Hillbilly Quartet this evening - a show not to be missed!

Urban Hillbilly Quartet

“These concrete jungle hayseeds from the wind-whipped plains of St. Paul are fervent eclectics, liable to wander into funk, Arabic, or Irish music at the drop of a hi-hat. But their true allegiance is to bands like the Flying Burrito Brothers and their descendants, who like to mash together country, bluegrass, and rock n’ roll.” Rick Mason. October 2003. City Pages. (Mpls, MN) It started as a jam session in 1995 in a now burnt-out St. Paul hole-in-the-wall bar. Over 18 years later, the Urban Hillbilly Quartet has grown into an award-winning Twin Cities-based ensemble that delivers an eclectic mix of musical styles, blending electric guitar, piano, accordion, bass and drums. On stage, the Hillbillies perform mainly original material--most of which can be found on their nine albums. Their music has been influenced by: Midwest powerhouses The Jayhawks and Uncle Tupelo; UK’s Grand Drive; Canada’s Bruce Cockburn; and folk/jazz star David Grisman. UHQ has been compared to R.E.M., The Grateful Dead and The Waterboys. The core of the band is Erik Brandt (guitar, accordion, piano, lead vocals), Jeremy Szopinski (electric guitar), Dave Strahan (electric guitar, banjo, vocals), Mike Schultz (bass) and Jim Orvis (drums) who have been performing together in the UHQ all over the United States and overseas.

TLA- Live Jazz Music

TLA is the combination of three top tier Twin Cities jazz players who happen to have deep connections to Northfield. Bassist Kevin Clements taught jazz bass at Carleton College for years when he wasn’t flying as a commercial pilot or gigging with folks like Rosemary Clooney, Robert Goulet or any number of Twin Cities jazz greats. Like wise drummer Eric Hanson has been a mainstay in the Twin Cities jazz scene for decades. Dave Hagedorn is among the most in-demand vibes (the vibraphone is that thing that looks like a xylophone) players in the country, having played with some of the most prestigious musicians and organizations in music from Brian Setzer and Phil Hey to the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and The Mormon Tabernacle Choir. These three guys will come together at Imminent Brewing on Sunday afternoon to help you wind down your weekend with some cool jazz and a couple relaxing pints.

Matt Arthur & the Bratlanders

Matt Arthur is a fiercely contrarian Southern Minnesota blind man with a voice that calls to mind Johnny Cash, Nick Cave, and John Darnielle. Matt's band, The Bratlanders, is led by identically-bearded twins, and the group’s rootsy sound is a mix of rustic folk, old-time blues, cosmic country, indie dirges, and bombastic anthems. Their songs would shuffle sweetly through a playlist packed with early-70s Stones, Crazy Horse-era Neil Young, and more recent offerings from Sturgill Simpson and the Drive By Truckers.

Potter's Pasties

Potter's Pasties

One of the big myths about England is the one that says the food is terrible.

Yes, it’s true that you can’t really find a cold glass of water in the UK, and it helps to really love peas, but to just dismiss the culinary offerings of an entire country (or four united ones, even) is folly. And wrong. And kind of ignorant.

And it is clearly the work of someone who has never eaten a pastie.

First of all, they’re pronounced pă-stees, and secondly, they’re awesome. Potter’s Pasties, the finest maker of pasties in the Upper Midwest, will be at Imminent Brewing to show you just how good these things are.

These are traditional puff pastry wrapped pies with ingredients like minced beef, onions, potatoes and gravy, or braised pork, apples, onions and coriander. Potter’s has created some of their own unique offerings, as well with Thai ingredients, or veggie offerings.

Potter’s Pasties has long been considered among the best of the Twin Cities food trucks. We can’t wait to have them parked at Imminent Brewing!

About Davina and The Vagabonds
Since exploding onto the scene in 2005, Davina and the Vagabonds have grown from a down-and-dirty blues band into one of the most exciting acoustic ensembles on the international stage. This high-energy quintet has established itself with a stellar live show, a professional look, and good old-fashioned hard work. In recent years they have performed in 45 states, 2 Canadian provinces and 12 European countries.

With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits, the band draws from the last 100 years of American music, and is converting audiences one show at a time. So much more than just a blues act, DATV’s shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill, and tender gospel passages. Davina’s voice and stage presence defy category in a different way. Davina has been compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice. Sowers is a true original.

For several years the band has been on the road more than they are home in the Twin Cities, but when they are home, they can be found at the Dakota! One of the keys to Davina’s success is the band’s irresistible live show; when the idea for a live record was presented, the Dakota became the obvious choice to do it at. Davina and the Vagabonds’ latest record, Nicollet and 10th, was recorded over two nights in early 2015 here at the Dakota. Like its predecessors, 2014’s Sunshine and 2011’s Black Cloud, Nicollet and 10th is the latest chapter in Davina and the Vagabonds’ New Spin on an Old Sound mission!

Fred the Bear

Fred the Bear is an alt-rock band known for their rich harmonies, emotive dynamics and original songs. FTB’s music reflects on life's promises and disappointments through personal crafted lyrics and driving rhythms.  Mixed within their originals is a blend of music from other Midwest artists, currently touring groups and classic bands.

Their name and their drive for a great live sound is a tribute to Bruce "Fred the Bear" Eschler.  At his bar, the "Bear's Den", you’d always get a stiff drink and when the music was crankin', you were in for a heck of a night.  So we play tribute to the man who provided us with our first glimpse into the energy of live music .... Fred the Bear.  Band Members include: Ray Coudret, Beth Kanzelman, Bob Kanzelman and Jerry Spencer
